Our Shelter
A place built with our community, for the cats who need us.
Before moving into our current shelter, NAPS operated for many years from a modest 600-square-foot space generously provided by local businessman Kin Leong. Despite its limitations—including no running water, poor insulation and limited ability to separate animals—the space allowed NAPS to continue helping cats in the community while working toward something better.
After years of fundraising and support from donors, sponsors, grant providers and the community, that goal became a reality when NAPS moved into our current facility in December 2018.
Where We Started
A New Chapter
After ten years of dedicated fundraising, community support and planning, NAPS reached an exciting milestone when we officially moved into our new shelter in December 2018.
Made possible through the generosity of donors, fundraisers, corporate sponsors and grant providers, the new facility represented a tremendous step forward for NAPS and the cats in our care.
For the first time, our shelter had many of the essentials that had been missing from our previous space—including running water, easy-to-clean surfaces, a spacious isolation room, and our own washer and dryer.
More than simply a new building, the move gave NAPS a safer, more functional environment where we could continue growing and providing better care for cats in our community.
Our Shelter Today
Today, NAPS operates from our shelter at 2405 19th Avenue in Nanton, located just south of the Nanton Veterinary Clinic.
Since moving into the facility, we've continued making improvements to create a space that supports both the physical and emotional well-being of the cats who stay with us.
The shelter provides dedicated areas for daily care, veterinary and isolation needs, as well as spaces where cats can rest, play, socialize and simply feel safe while they wait for their next chapter.
During the warmer months, our secure outdoor catio provides even more room to explore. Cats can enjoy fresh air, sunshine and all the sights and sounds of the outdoors while remaining safely protected.
A shelter needs to provide more than food and a roof overhead. Cats need opportunities to climb, explore, play, rest and choose when they'd like a little space of their own.
With the help of generous NAPS supporters, our shelter has continued to evolve with those needs in mind.
Designed With Cats in Mind
Room to Climb
Custom enrichment shelves in our main cat room and the Lynne Maynard Quiet Room provide valuable vertical space. Cats can climb high, stretch out on a ledge, find a quiet place alone or curl up together. These shelves were designed and installed by NAPS supporter Dean Youngren.
Fresh Air & Sunshine
Our large secure outdoor catio, generously built by Ramshaw Excavating & Landscaping Services, significantly expands the cats' usable space during suitable weather and gives them a safe way to experience the outdoors
Space for Individual Needs
From our spacious isolation room to quieter areas used by kittens and cats needing a calmer environment, the shelter gives our team greater flexibility to provide care based on each cat's individual needs.
