Barn Cat Program
A different kind of home. The same chance to belong.
Some cats prefer a little distance, a sheltered barn, and a routine of their own. Our Barn Cat Program connects cats better suited to barn or acreage life with people who can provide food, fresh water, shelter, and ongoing care.
They may never curl up on your lap, but they still deserve safety, kindness, and a place to call home.

Adopt a Barn Cat
A different kind of home. The same chance to belong.
Not every cat is comfortable curled up on a couch. Some are happiest keeping their distance from people, exploring a sheltered farmyard, and settling into their own routine.
These cats still deserve safety, care, and a place to call home.
The Nanton Animal Protection Society’s Barn Cat Program helps cats who are better suited to barn or acreage life find people willing to provide a permanent, caring home.
Why this program matters
For cats who are fearful of close human contact or poorly suited to a traditional indoor home, adoption opportunities can be limited. A busy shelter can also be a difficult place for them to feel comfortable.
A suitable barn or acreage offers another path—a chance to live with more independence while still having someone looking out for them.
By welcoming a barn cat, you help a cat whose needs might otherwise make finding a home difficult. You also help NAPS make room to care for other cats who need us.
They may never become lap cats, but their lives matter just as much.
A working cat is still a commitment
Barn cats may offer a helpful presence around your property, but they depend on you for their daily needs. Hunting cannot replace regular meals.
Every placement requires:
A suitable barn or acreage with secure, weather-protected shelter.
Fresh food and clean water every day.
Veterinary care when needed.
A secure acclimation space while the cats become familiar with their new home.
A commitment to their ongoing care, even if they prefer to admire you from a distance.
Giving them time to settle in
Moving to an unfamiliar property can be overwhelming. Barn cats need a secure acclimation period before being allowed to explore freely.
This gives them time to learn the sounds, smells, feeding routine, and people associated with their new home. NAPS provides acclimation guidance to help you prepare and give your cats the best possible start.
Adoption fees
One barn cat: $50
Two barn cats: $75
Placements are based on the cats available and the suitability of the home. Male or female preferences cannot be accommodated.
Have room for a second chance?
If you have a suitable barn or acreage and can provide consistent care, we would love to hear from you.
Join our interest list and tell us about your property and how many cats you hope to welcome. Joining the list does not guarantee an immediate placement; availability and a suitable match will determine the next steps.
