fees and vouchers
What are your adoption fees?
You can find our adoption fee table here.
What payment methods are available?
All adoption fees can be accepted via cash, cheque or eTransfer. The shelter does not currently have a debit machine due to a lack of internet.
What do adoption fees include?
For adult cats the adoption fee includes up to date vaccines (including Rabies), a completed spay or neuter & tattoo in addition to a de-worming sometime in the last 6-12 months.
For kittens the adoption fee includes a veterinary voucher to cover the full cost of three kitten booster vaccines (3 weeks apart starting at 5 weeks of age), a Rabies vaccine (at the time of spay/neuter), de-worming at 5 weeks of age & the spay or neuter surgery when the kitten is 6 months of age.
For birds or other exotics such as bunnies, guinea pigs, etc sometimes the adoption fee includes enclosures, food and other necessary supplies, but changes from case to case.
All NAPS adoptions come with a 30 Day Health Guarantee. This means any illness attributed to an animals stay at the shelter (ex; ear mites, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, eye infection, weeping eyes/nose) that is detected within 30 days of adoption and is in need of veterinarian intervention will be fully covered by the society. This guarantee only qualifies if the vet care is received at The Nanton Veterinary Clinic. This guarantee does NOT cover newly discovered genetic issues, injury or illness not associated with an animals stay in the shelter setting.

When is a Veterinary Voucher issued for a newly adopted kitten
The voucher will be issued up to 30 days from the date of adoption, and is issued via email to the adopter.
How do I redeem a Veterinary Voucher for my kittens spay?
The owner is required to make an appointment for spay or neuter with The Nanton Vet Clinic sometime between the vouchers eligibility date & expiry date.
On the day of the appointment, the owner must print the voucher, and present it to veterinary staff upon dropping off the animal. Please make note on the voucher if the animals name has been changed from their shelter given name. This is to ensure the staff know which animal to bill the procedure under, as they will already have a file at the clinic.

What is a “Courtesy Voucher”?
Occasionally, NAPS will issue a Courtesy Voucher to cover a portion of or the entirety of the cost to spay/neuter an animal that has never been in our care. Scenarios where this may take place:
- Low income families require a spay/neuter for one reason or another
- A concerned citizen has a feral/stray animal in their care or on their property which needs to be sterilized to prevent further litters
Do vouchers have an expiry date
Yes. The voucher has an issue date (usually within 30 days of adoption) and an expiry date (usually one month or less after the date the kitten becomes of age for the procedure). If your voucher has expired, please contact us to have it replaced!
We would prefer the animals be fixed late rather than not at all, so we don't mind issuing a new one.

How can i go about adopting an animal?
NAPS does adoption consultations by appointment only. If you are interested in an animal you see on our website or our social media, please contact us via email ([email protected]) to make an appointment for an adoption consultation.
Can i adopt a cat for my barn?
Absolutely. As long as the cat in question is suitable for that setting, and the adoptee assures us they will provide a warm/heated shelter in the winter, and kibble food and water year round, we are happy to adopt to barns, shops, etc. All barn cats are adopted sterilized and tattooed without exception.

How can I surrender an animal to NAPS?
Is there a cat bylaw in Nanton?
Are canines required to be licensed in Nanton?
- Surrenders MUST be by appointment only. Drop-in surrenders have the potential to be turned away due to lack of space or other variables. To ensure we can help you, please make an appointment in advance.
- Due to the small size of our facility, NAPS can only accept surrenders on a case by case scenario. The decision is made by the shelter management and often includes insight from our affiliated veterinarians.
- Please be advised that NAPS does charge surrender fees where necessary. Not all cases are subject to the fee. Sterilized animals who are up to date on their vaccines will more than likely be exempt from the surrender fee. Surrender fees help cover a small portion of veterinary related expenses upon intake and can range from $20-$50 per feline and $50-$100 per canine. If you are unable to pay a surrender fee, please let us know and we can work with on that.
- NAPS DOES NOT take small exotics such as bunnies, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, chickens, etc. You can contact the shelter for information on who you can contact for help with these animals.
- NAPS serves Nanton and surrounding areas. Surrenders have been accepted in the past from High River, Cayley, Vulcan, Milo, Parkland, Claresholm, Champion and Coaldale.
- More information on surrendering litters of kittens, what to do if you have a stray in your possession & more is available on this website.
- To determine if you are able to surrender an animal at this time, please contact our shelter manager via email: [email protected]
Is there a cat bylaw in Nanton?
- There is currently a cat bylaw in Nanton. Please see the Town of Nanton Bylaws for more information. Cats are to be confined to the owners' yards and not be roaming free.
- NAPS personally requests that people with indoor/outdoor cats properly identify their pets with a collar and tags, a tattoo, or a microchip with up to date information to contact you.
- Identification for outdoor cats greatly reduces the risk of your animal being trapped & vetted at our expense, taken in by a stranger, or given away on a buy and sell by a well-meaning but uninformed concerned citizen.
Are canines required to be licensed in Nanton?
- Yes, the Town of Nanton requires that you license any canines in your home. Details on the cost of licensing can be found at The Town of Nanton website.
- Licensing fees do not benefit NAPS in any way, and are not imposed by us.
